GREENE KING OXFORD AUNT SALLY LEAGUE 2012

REPORT FROM PAIRS MATCHES PLAYED ON WEDNESDAY 20th JUNE



It was Pairs competition this week played down to the four semi finalists and in the Oxford Pairs Kevin Baker & Philip Adams from The Cricketers battled their way to the semi final without dropping a leg.
In the first round they were pitted up against Section Three paring of Graham Hambridge and Gary Pether from The Bullnose Morris ‘A’. Baker opened the first leg with a maximum six and Adams followed it up with five giving them a whopping total of eleven. A good reply from Hambridge (4) and Pether (5) left them just two short. The Cricketers pair won the next leg 5-4. They then demolished John Allnutt and Nick Chapman from The Gladiators 8-4, 4-3 in the next round. They had a tougher game in the quarter final against Gary Coulthard and Willy Waite from The Bullnose Morris ‘A’. After winning the opening leg Adams & Baker set eight. Coulthard replied with a three and Waite clanged off five dolls to take the leg to three sticks which The Cricketers won with a set of five.

Ken Maunder and Trevor Greenaway from Garsington Sports Club ‘A’ will join them in the semis. They had a tough game in the second round against Pete Coates and Lee Thompson from The Red Lion Eynsham with both legs going to three sticks after they were both tied 8-8 & 10-10. The second leg The Red Lion pair set ten with Thompson bagging himself a six. Maunder replied with a maximum six and Greenaway clanged of the four dolls needed to take it to three sticks again, which they won 5-4.
In the quarter final they saw of Pete Dempsey and Mick Phipps from The Three Pigeons 9-2, 7-6.

The third semi-finalists are Paul Sawyer and Steve Bayliss from Red Lion ‘A’ Kidlington but they had a gigantic struggle against Eddie Lacey and Mick Berry from Red Lion ‘A’ Eynsham in the first round. After winning the opening leg 7-5 with Bayliss hitting a six the next leg was tied 6-6 then 5-5 on three sticks and 1-1 on one stick. So it was back to six sticks which the Kidlington pair won 8-7.
In the second round they just got the better over Darren StJohn and Ady Shepherd from The New Club ‘A’ 2-1. With the game nicely poised at one leg each Sawyer banged in a six in the final leg to give them a total of eight, which proved to strong for The New Club boys.
In the quarter final they had a comfortable 2-0 win over Ady Cross and Alan Goodgame from Six Bells ‘C’ Kidlington 9-2, 7-6 with Sawyer hitting his second six of the night.

The final semi-finalists are Kevin Giles & Paul Townsend from The Three Pigeons who defeated Roger Goodall & Dick Walsh from The Six Bells ‘C’ Kidlington in a tense quarter final 2-0. Giles & Townsend won the first leg 5-4 and set the second leg with 9 which proved too strong.

In the Lower Section pairs last years winners Clive Walsh & Barry Mudd from Kidlington Sports Club crashed out in the Quarter finals this season to Peter Sellar and Mathew Arnold from The Crown Chalgrove 2-1. The Crown pair won the opening leg but lost the second leg on three sticks after it was tied 6-6. They then went on to win the final and deciding leg 6-2.

Newcomers Frank Howlett and Paul Sims from The Bullnose Morris ‘B’ made it to the semis with a hard fought battle in the quarter final against team mates Dale Macer and Eddie Lacey. After winning the first leg 4-3 the second leg was a lengthy affair. Six sticks was tied 4-4, three sticks was also tied 2-2 no one troubled the doll in the one sticker, so back to six which again was tied 4-4. Dale and Macer finally winning it on the second three sticker 1-0. Howlett and Sims the won the deciding leg 4-2.

Richard Butler and Graham Pitts from Kennington Social Club reached their first semi-final after an epic against team mates Adam Baker and Derek Fitzgerald in their quarter final. They lost the opening leg on one stick after six sticks 5-5 and three sticks 3-3 could not separate them. Butler & Pitts levelled in the next leg 3-2 then scraped through in the final leg on three sticks 3-2 after it was tied 4-4.

Gareth Williams and Steve Dean from The Cricketers ‘A’ complete the semi –final line up after they defeated team mates Richard Berry & Steve Jessop in the Quarter finals. They had to come from behind after they lost the first leg 6-4, they then went on to win the next two 5-2, 7-5.
