Week 15 August 13th
Garsington Sports Club almost claimed their first win of the season but was pipped by the last stick of the night. Playing at home to Littlemore British Legion ‘A’ they set the opening leg with 16. A very slow start by the Legion in reply saw them have only 6 on the board with three players to throw and it didn’t get much better as they left anchorman Kevin Stuart needing all six to tie. A good effort by Stuart but he fell one doll short with 5 to give Garsington an early lead. Legion levelled in the second leg 21-14 and then set 18 in the final and deciding leg. Garsington matched that to send it to three sticks. Legion put Garsington in and they set 9. Legion left Stuart needing one to win and he accomplished that to deny Garsington the sweet smell of victory.
Black Horse ‘A’ take a 3-point lead at the top of Section 1 following their 2-1 win at The Ampleforth Arms ‘A’. Black Horse set and won the first leg 22-19 and were set 19 in the second leg. It was not looking good for The Horse when they only had 10 on the board with three players to go. The tail wagged with anchorman Steve Walton whipping off the three dolls to win the leg by the odd doll with 20. The Ampleforth set and won the last leg 24-22 to deny the Horse maximum points. Pete Rampton starred with 14 dolls (4-5-5) and was backed up well by teammate Steve Walton with 13 dolls (4-3-6) for The Black Horse.
Pip Goulding shone for The New Club ‘A’ with a baker’s dozen (5-4-4) in their 3-0 win at home to Masons Arms ‘A’. New Club set and won the opening leg 25-22 and in the next two legs chasing scores of 19-21 they hit 20 & 27 in reply to complete the whitewash.
SECTION 2
Black Horse top section 2 after they clipped the wings of The Blackbird following their 2-1 home win with some inconsistent throwing. Blackbird set the initial leg with 17, with The Horse sneaking past that with 18. Black Horse set the next leg with 20 which proved to be no problem for The Blackbird who flew past that with an impressive 25. The Blackbird set the final and deciding leg, however it seems the effort in the second leg took its toll as they could only muster up a score of 10. Black Horse hitting 16 in reply to win the leg and with it the game.
Six Bells ‘C’ title ambitions took a hit when they lost away at Donnington Club ‘B’ 3-0. This was The Bells worse score of the season, and it could not come at a worse time. They lost all three legs 17-10, 16-9, 16-15.
Cowley Workers woes continue when they crashed to their fifth straight defeat this time at home to Duke Of Monmouth 2-1, who won the first two legs 15-13, 20-16. Workers set and won the final leg 15-14. It was not a good night overall with no players hitting double figures.
Queens Head ‘A’ won their third game on the bounce which moved them into the top half of the Section following their 3-0 at home to Rose Hill Club. Queens set all three legs and in the first leg with 15. Rose Hill were on course to pass that when their anchorman needed just one to win, however he blobbed out to send it to a three sticker which Queens won. Queens then went on to win the next two legs 14-11, 16-15. Tony Eeles was the only bright spot for Rose Hill when he top scored with 11 dolls (5-1-5).
SECTION 3
Only three points separate the top four in Section 3 with New Club ‘B’ leading the way by one point despite losing to near rivals Masons Arms ‘B’ 2-1 who now trail by three points. Masons set and won the first leg 15-11. New Club hit straight back in the second leg setting and winning it 18-15 despite two blobs in the leg. A set of 20 in the final leg by The Masons was too much for New Club who ended up with an unlucky 13. Chris Jilbert (4-3-3) and Joe Bandrowski (2-4-4) for The Masons were the only players to hit double figures with 10 dolls.
Cricketers Arms are still hanging in there despite losing at home to Donnington Club ‘A’. Setting all three legs, an impressive score of 23 by Donnington in the opening leg was more than enough as Cricketers hit 12 in reply. Donny went two up in the second leg 17-13 and set 14 in the final leg. Cricketers regrouped and hit 18 in reply for a deserved crucial point.
Only one doll separated Blecthingdon Sports and Queens Head B overall, but it was Bletch who came out on top 2-1 in a very close game. They set and won the first leg 15-13 and then set 12 in the second leg. In reply Queens left anchorman Jack Wells needing just one to win and that’s all he hit but was enough to level the game. The Sportsmen set the deciding leg with just 10, however Queens struggled and had to rely on Wells to whip off the two dolls needed to send the leg to a three sticker, which Bletchingdon won.
SECTION 4
The last unbeaten record in the league went crashing in Section 4 when Ampleforth Arms ‘B’ lost away to their closest rivals Six Bells ‘B’ 3-0 who now top the league. This was the best performance of the season by The Bells, as for The Amp this was their second worse score of the season, did nerves finally get to them while The Bells were up for the challenge? Henry Clarke led the way for The Bells with 11 dolls (4-3-4) as they won all three legs 17-12, 19-15, 15-11.
Catherine Wheel are on a roll and won their third game on the trot after they beat Kidlington Football club at home 2-1. They had to rely on a three-stick shootout in the opening leg after it was tied 10-10. Football club levelled in the second leg 11-10. Both teams enhanced their game in the final leg with Kidlington setting 15, however Catherine Wheel were up to the challenge with anchorman Dale Jacob clanging off the three dolls required to win the leg by the smallest of margins with 16.
Kevin Bloomfield top scored with 9 dolls (4-4-1) and guided the Golden Ball to a 3-0 home win against White Hart, winning all three legs 14-8, 19-8, 12-11.
