Week 9 Report

STUART & SONS OXFORD & DISTRICT AUNT SALLY 2022
REPORT WEEK 9
At the halfway stage of the season, Premier leaders The Black Prince unbeaten run ended abruptly at The Gladiators ‘A’ in a high scoring thrilling game. Black Prince set the opening leg and with a six from anchor man Mick Phipps they hit 26. A steady reply from Gladiators left anchor man Kevin Baker needing three to win, and he did just that with his final stick. Gladiators then set the second leg with a formidable 31 which proved too much for the section leaders who could only reply with 24. Final leg Black Prince went in and set a challenging 29. A poor response from the Glad’s first three players left the remaining five players needing 23 to win and they were up for the challenge, a five from Scott Thompson started the contest, a six from Martin Cooke left anchor man Baker needing four to win. Once again, he did not disappoint whipping off five dolls to give a total of 31 and complete the whitewash. Martin Cooke with a baker’s dozen (3-4-6) for The Glad’s and likewise for The Black Prince, Rob Bradford (4-4-5) and Mick Phipps (6-2-5) were top dogs.

The George ‘A’ shocked North Leigh FC on their own patch by coming away with a 2-1 win. George took an early lead in the first leg 24-19 and then was set 25 in the second leg. Four dolls from anchor man Kevin Stuart secured the leg by the smallest of margins with 26. The football club redeemed themselves in the final leg, setting and winning it 28-21. Geoff Glenister was in top form for North Leigh with 14 dolls (4-5-5).

Blackbird ‘B’ move five points clear at the top of Section 1 thanks to a fine 3-0 win at New Club. Chasing sets of 17 & 20 in the first two legs they threw well to win them both with returns of 23 & 25. Final leg was much closer when chasing a set of 19 The Blackbird sneaked past it with 20 to complete the whitewash. Eddie Lacey was top dog for The Bird with a dozen dolls (5-4-3) while Andy Lewis matched that with 12 dolls for The New Club (5-3-4).
Garsington Sports are still finding this season tough as they lost for the eighth time, this instance at home to The Swan ‘A’ despite Barry Ruffles clanging off thirteen dolls (3-4-6). Swan won all three legs 22-19, 23-19, 23-22. Martin Herbert bagged himself a six in his 13 doll haul (6-3-4) for The Swan.

After losing their opening seven games Ampleforth Arms ‘A’ make it two wins on the bounce when they defeated Donnington Club ‘C’ 3-0 at home. Setting all three legs the Amp cruised to victory 20-11, 19-11, 16-15.

SECTION 2
Red Lion ‘B’ Kidlington have opened a five point lead in Section 2 after a hard fought 3-0 win at home to Queens Head. They won the first two legs quite comfortably 23-11, 16-14 but were made to fight all the way in the final leg. Queens set 17 and in reply Lion’s anchor man Steve Ward was left needing five to win, and he was up to the task whipping off the winning doll with his final stick to give a total of 18.
Chequers ‘B’ move into second spot with a 3-0 win at Six Bells ‘A’. They won the first two legs 16-12, 22-17 and the final leg on three sticks after it was tied 16-16.
Steady scoring by Seacourt Bridge saw them take maximum points at home to Vikings ‘A’. They won the opening leg 20-15 and had to rely on a three stick shoot out in the second leg after it was tied 23-23. Vikings set the final leg but crumpled, hitting only a paltry 9, which Seacourt passed with ease hitting 22.
Gladiators ‘B’ came away from Chequers ‘A’ with a fine 2-1 win. They had to do it the hard way after losing the first leg 21-16, they recovered well to win the next two legs 20-18, 21-18. Keith Tanner top scored with 11 dolls (2-5-4) for The Glad’s.
Red Lion ‘A’ Yarnton dropped a leg against Donnington ‘A’ who are propping up the table. Lion scrapped the first leg by the odd doll 21-20, but Donnington hit straight back to level in the next leg 16-12. Lion were set a target of 17 in the final leg, and with two players left they only needed four to win. However, with the seventh man hitting a blob, it left anchor man Mark Poulter needing the four to win and he did not disappoint whipping off the four dolls to snatch the leg with 18. Poulter finished with a dozen haul of dolls (4-4-4) while Donnington’s Ian Walters also hit a dozen (5-3-4).

SECTION 3
In Section 3, Pete Kennett was in scintillating form has he clanged off 14 dolls and in process bagged himself a six (3-6-5) to guide table toppers Masons Arms ‘A’ to a 3-0 win at The Catherine Wheel. They set and won all three legs 17-14, 17-12, 23-17.
Mick Morbey hit a dozen dolls (3-5-4) bit it was all in vain as Vikings Club ‘B’ fell to a 2-1 defeat at Donnington Club ‘B’, despite winning the opening leg 16-13. Donnington levelled in the next leg 15-13 and completed the turnaround in the final leg 20-17.
Red Lion ‘A’ Kidlington won their third game on the trot when they beat hosts Cricketers Arms Littleworth 2-1 in a good, spirited game. Leg scores being 17-12, 21-14, 15-19.

SECTION 4
There is a three-way tie at the top of Section 4 and one of the leaders Bletchington Sports had a long night against Six Bells ‘C’ Kidlington when the first two legs went to three sticks. They were tied 12-12, 14-14 with the leaders winning them both on three sticks. Bells set and won the final leg 15-12 for a well-deserved point.
Title contenders Red Lion ‘B’ Yarnton had a disastrous night at The Tandem when some poor throwing cost them the game. They won the opening leg when chasing a set of 9 they sneaked past it with 11. However, when chasing sets of 20 & 19 in the next two legs they could only reply with 11 & 10.
Graham Morton top scored for Six Bells Quarry with a dozen dolls (5-3-4) in their 2-1 win at Masons Arms ‘B’. The first leg had to be decided on three sticks when it was tied 16-16, Bells winning the three sticks shoot out. Masons levelled in the next leg 13-11 before Bells claimed victory in the final leg 15-12.
Leaders Kidlington FC fell to a 3-0 defeat at Rose Hill but the result did not give a true reflection on the scores and how close the game was. The football club set the opening leg with 12 and in reply Rose Hill left anchor man Brian Lovatt one to win, unfortunately he blobbed out sending the leg to three sticks, which Rose Hill won. Second leg Rose Hill set and won 16-14. The final leg Kidlington set with 13 and this time Lovatt redeemed himself and hit the two dolls needed to tie the leg to another three sticks. Again, Rose Hill came out on top to complete the whitewash. Mark Faulkner scored well for Rose Hill with 10 dols (3-4-3).
The two teams propping up the table Six Bells ‘B’ Kidlington and Duke Of Monmouth clashed and it turned out to be a high scoring entertaining game with only one doll separating the teams in all three legs. Bells won the first leg 16-15, Duke levelled in the next leg 11-10, with Bells securing victory in the final leg 19-18. Simon Hopkins top scored for The Bell’s with 11 dolls (5-2-4).

SECTION 5
Section 5 leaders Littlemore Rugby Club had to come form behind to beat hosts White Horse. A good set of 16 by White Horse secured them the first leg when the Rugby men could only hit 9 in reply. A set of only 8 by White Horse in the second leg was never going to be enough as the Rugby Club sailed past that with 16 themselves. Final and deciding leg went to the rugby club 14-11.
Northway Club ‘B’ boosted their title ambitions and in turn put a dent in The Cricketers Arms Cowley ones when they secured a 3-0 home win. Northway won the opening leg on three sticks after it was tied 11-11 then completed the whitewash in the next two legs 18-8, 15-11.
