FINALS NIGHT REPORT

FINALS NIGHT REPORT 2019

In a packed Cowley Workers Club Dave Simms from The Ampleforth Arms ‘A’ was crowned Oxford Singles winner when he beat Billy Trinder from The George ‘A’ 2-0. Both players were competing in the final for the first time and Trinder started off in the opening leg with a set of 3. In reply Simms hit four to go one up. Simms set in the second leg with a formidable five. Trinder in reply hit three out of his first four sticks but missed with his fifth to give Simms victory. A rare feat coming from a player out of the top sections.
Gladiators ‘A’ won the Greene King Cup for the third time in four seasons when they came from behind to beat The George ‘A’ 2-1. George set and won the opening leg 25-20. Gladiators hit straight back in the second leg to draw level 29-20. Final and deciding leg George could only set with nineteen which was never going to be enough as The Glad’s passed that with two players to spare. Andy Beal for The Gladiators was in top form with fifteen dolls (5-5-5).
There was some outstanding throwing in The Monty Greenaway Fours where the Swan ‘A’ triumphed for the third time in a row when they defeated The Black Prince ‘B’ 2-0. Leadoff man for The Swan Dick Walsh clanged off two sixes while Black Prince Steve McAteer also hit a six. The first leg Prince could only set with a measly 9, with The Swan hitting 17 in reply. Black Prince improved in the next leg setting with fifteen. With Walsh starting off with a six Swan were well on their way to victory leaving anchor man Keith Powell needing only two to win. However he struggled and only hit the winning doll with his final stick to end up with 16.
The Ted Houghton Singles was a corker between two youngsters Tom Finney from The Blackbird & Jack Lane from Northway Club ‘C’. Lane set and won the first leg 3-1 and was then set four by Finney in the next leg. This did not faze Lane as he clanged off the five dolls needed to give him his first singles title.
Kevin Stuart & Ashley Stuart from The George ‘A’ put last year’s defeat in the Parent & Child Cup behind them as they beat Jason & John Weller from The Gladiators ‘A’ in this season’s final 2-0. The Stuarts won the first leg comfortably and then were set five in the next leg. Son Ashley started off with a one leaving dad Kevin needing five to win and he did not disappoint whipping off the winning doll with his final stick.
Kevin Stuart then made it a double win when he partnered James Morrison to beat Andy Lewis and Mark Washington from The Ampleforth Arms ‘A’ 2-1 in the Oxford Pairs. The George pair won the first leg with Lewis and Washington levelling in the next leg on three sticks after it was tied 8-8. Final and deciding leg went to Stuart & Morrison 7-5.
In the Under 21’s Cup Daniel Reading from The Swan ‘A’ defeated three times winner Liam Costar (Masons Arms ‘B’) 2-0.
The Lowers Pairs champions are Ian Gillett and Richard Hathaway from The Chequers ‘B’ when they beat Steve Bradbury and John Griffin from Cowley Workers 2-1.
The Bullnose Morris ‘B’ beat Green Road Club ‘B’ 2-0 to be crowned The Jim Whitbread Cup winners for the first time. The opening leg was a low scoring affair with The Bullnose setting and winning it 9-7. The second leg was tied 13-13 with the Bullnose winning it and with it the cup on three sticks.
Vikings Sports ‘D’ beat The Masons Arms ‘B’ in the Oxford Fours 2-0. Masons set the first leg with 6 and in reply Vikings started off well with Andy Clare hitting three but their next two players both blobbed out leaving anchor man Bernie McCormack needing four to win which he duly obliged. Masons set again in the second leg, this time with 7. Vikings sailed past that with Andy Clare and Chris Payne both hitting four apiece to seal victory.
Trophies were presented by the popular Peter Rhodes-Brown.
