OXFORD & DISTRICT AUNT SALLY 2019
REPORT WEEK 1
Despite the inconsistent weather eleven players managed to record a six in the opening night of the Greene King Oxford Aunt Sally season. Premier holders The Swan ‘A’ got off to a perfect start of their defence of the title with a maximum 3-0 home win against The Woodman. Jon Townsend (4-5-4) and Keith Powell (3-5-5) both starred for The Swan with thirteen dolls apiece as they won all three legs 24-22, 26-23, 30-18. Singles campion Mark Rollins chipped in with a six in his eleven dolls for The Woodman.
Newcomers to Section 1 Red Lion ‘A’ Yarnton shocked seasoned Premier team the Gladiators ‘A’ on their own patch. Gladiators started off well strolling the first leg 27-19. Red Lion responded well in the next leg to level 27-19 and was then set 23 in the final leg. In reply Lion left anchor man Mark Poulter needing four to win and he was up to the challenge going one better by clanging off five dolls to win the leg with 25. Andy Beal with fourteen dolls (6-5-3) was top dog for The Gladiators.
Roger Goodall hit fourteen dolls (5-6-3) for The Black Prince but it was all in vain as they crashed at Garsington Sports Club 2-1. The opening leg Garsington set and won 26-24. Garsington then set an impressive 30 in the second leg. A steady reply from Black Prince left anchor man Ian McAteer needing all six to tie, and he almost pulled it off but fell one short with five. Black Prince grabbed a point in the final leg 26-25. Phil Jackson for Garsington was in top form with thirteen dolls (2-6-5).
Swan ‘B’ promoted to the Premier Section started off well with a 2-1 win at The New Club. They won the first leg 24-22 lost the next 24-23 but clinched victory in the final leg 26-24. Alan Major (5-3-5) hit a baker’s dozen for The Swan.

In Section 2 Elliot Greenough hit a rare six as Donnington Club ‘C’ came from behind to beat The Bullnose Morris ‘A’ 2-1. After losing the opening leg 20-13 Donnington bounced right back with an imposing 28. Bullnose had no answer replying with 17. Final and deciding leg Donnington chased and won 25-21.
Newly promoted Ampleforth Arms ‘A’ got off to a faultless start against Tiddington Cricket Club by whitewashing them 3-0 in the leg scores of 20-17, 18-16, 22-19.
Pete Rampton starred for Six Bells ‘D’ Kidlington with fourteen dolls (6-4-4) as they beat their E team 2-1. They won the first two legs 15-14, 14-12 but couldn’t complete the whitewash losing the final leg on three sticks after it was tied 19-19.
Ken Soanes top scored for The Gladiators ‘C’ with eleven dolls including a six as they came away from Red Lion ‘A’ Marston with a 2-1 win. Lion took an early lead winning the first leg on three sticks after it was tied 17-17. Glad’s hit back in the next two legs 22-17, 21-18 to claim the win.
Jon Brown hit thirteen dolls (3-5-5) to lead Red Lion A Kidlington off to a good start but it was to no avail as they crashed to a 3-0 home defeat to Donnington Club ‘A’, 19-24, 11-19, 19-23.

In Section 3, Father & Son Dave & Ian Bowler both clanged off a six apiece in Littlemore British Legions ‘A’ 2-1 win against visitors New Club ‘B’. Ian ended up with a dozen dolls while dad ended up with 10 in the leg scores of 21-14, 15-18, 23-13.

Steve Tooke hit a baker’s dozen (4-4-5) for Catherine Wheel ‘B’ as they beat local rivals The Blackbird 2-1 in section 4. Blackbird started off well, setting and winning the opening leg 16-15. A set of 12 in the next leg was not enough as Catherine Wheel rolled past that with 15. Catherine Wheel secured victory in the final leg 18-14.
Simon Hopkins was in superb form for Green Road Club at The Bullnose ‘B’ whipping off thirteen dolls (3-5-5) however he was the only one to hit double figures as they fell to a 2-1 defeat in the leg scores of 19-10, 16-19,11-15.

In Section 5 Red Lion ‘B’ Marston got off to a disastrous start at The Tandem when they could only muster up a set of 8. Tandem had no problem in reply hitting 14 to give them an early lead. Tandem then set 15 in the next leg, however Red Lion regrouped and hit 18 in reply to level the game. Tandem set again in the final leg with 11. Red Lion improved as the night went on and hit 19 to complete the comeback.
Joe Bandrowski was in remarkable form as he bagged himself a six in his thirteen doll haul (5-2-6) to help Masons ‘B’ come away from The Cricketers Arms Littleworth with all three points. They won all three legs with ease, 17-13, 15-13, 21-11.

In Section 6 Nick Edmonds Snr clanged off thirteen dolls (5-4-4) for Green Road Club ‘B’ but it was an unlucky thirteen as they lost at home 2-1 to Red Lion ‘B’ Kidlington. All the damage was done in the first two legs, Lion winning them 16-13, 11-9. The club men fought back for a point in the final leg 15-9.
Golden Ball hit more dolls than their hosts Kidlington F.C ‘B team (35-33) but still managed to lose 2-1 in the leg scores of 11-8, 8-14, 14-13.
Matty Jacobs hit a maximum six for Chequers ‘B’ in their 2-1 home win over Catherine Wheel ‘A’ for whom Alan Butler top scored with eleven dolls. Leg scores being 14-16, 21-12,17-15.

Only one doll separated Headington Con Club & Marston British Legion in section 8 but it was decisive enough to give the Legion a narrow win. The opening leg was tied 10-10 with Legion winning it on three sticks. They then won the next leg by the odd doll 11-10 with Con Club wining the final leg 9-7 to give them a well-deserved point.
