Week 14

Games played Wednesday 9th August

Section One leaders The Three Pigeons had their wings clipped by The Red Lion ‘A’ 3-0 in a surprise result. The Lion won the opening leg 28-26 and then went two up in the next leg on three sticks after it was tied 26-26. They then completed the whitewash in the final leg 26-20. Eddie Edwards was in top form for The Pigeons with fifteen dolls (6-4-5) but it couldn’t prevent the Pigeons from defeat. Eddie Lacey with thirteen dolls (4-5-4) threw well for The Lion.
Second place The Woodman could not take advantage of The Pigeons slip up as they also crashed to a 3-0 defeat at The Black Prince. Rob Bradford led the way with fourteen dolls (4-5-5) as they won all three legs 31-26, 23-21, 26-20.
There were five sixes hit in the clash between The George ‘A’ and The Swan ‘B’ with some high individual scores. Swan ‘B’ won the game 2-1 in the leg scores of 27-24, 29-24, 25-29 but the highlights was James Morrison 15,(5-4-6) Kevin Stuart 14, (4-4-6) and Luke Purcell 11,(6-2-3) all clanging off a six for The George while Gary Baily 15, (4-6-5) and Simon King 14(5-6-3) did likewise for The Swan. John Greenaway (4-4-5) and Mark Revill (5-5-3) chipped in with thirteen each for The Swan.

The Premier Section top two teams met and leaders Gladiators ‘A’ came away from The New Club ‘A’ with all three points in a high scoring game. Kevin Giles for The Glad’s was in superb form as he bagged him self a six in his sixteen doll haul (5-6-5) and was well supported by Andy Beal with a baker’s dozen (6-3-4). Gladiators won all three legs 26-22, 30-27, 35-31. Roger Goodall was top dog for The New Club with fourteen dolls (4-4-6).
Holders The Swan ‘A’ are not giving up on retaining the title after they beat Garsington Sports Club ‘A’ at home 3-0. Chasing each leg they won them all 25-22, 26-25, 33-27. Jon Townsend was in top form with fourteen dolls (4-5-5).
Section 2 is still too tight to call as five teams are still within a chance of the title. Six Bells ‘E lead the chasing pack but dropped a vital home point to lowly Vikings Sports ‘A’. A first ever six from Andrew Hudson helped them win the opening leg 23-14 but chasing a set of seventeen in the next leg The Bells came up one short with sixteen. Bells then won the deciding leg 18-16.
Gladiators ‘B’ dented The Crowns chances with a 2-1 home win. The damage was all done in the first two legs which The Glad’s won 26-17, 22-14. Crown grabbed a point in the final leg on three sticks after it was tied 17-17.
The Bullnose Morris ‘A’ are still going strong but were mighty lucky to win at The Black Horse ‘C’ 2-1, when it could have easily been a 3-0 defeat. Bullnose set all three legs and in the opening leg hit 22. In reply Black Horse had fourteen on the board after their first four players but fell one short in the end with 21. In the second leg chasing only 17 The Black Horse needed only four from their last three players to win but fell apart dramatically and could only muster up two leaving them once again one short with 16. They finally won a chase in the final leg 21-18.
After leading the table for most of the season Chequers ‘C’ fell to their sixth defeat out of seven when Donnington Club ‘A’ beat them 2-1. Mark Simpson led the way for the club men with thirteen dolls (5-4-4) as Chequers won the opening leg 27-18 but then crashed dramatically in the next leg only setting with eleven which Donnington sailed past with 24. Donnington then wrapped up the win in the final leg 21-19.

Section 3 leaders Chequers ‘A’ collapsed dramatically to a 3-0 defeat at The King & Queen for whom Simon Jones starred with thirteen dolls (3-5-5). It was a fairly comfortable win for The King & Queen as they won all three legs 20-18, 21-14, 22-16. Despite the loss Chequers still remain one point clear.
New Club ‘B’ title ambitions took a hit as they lost 2-1 at Tiddington Cricket Club. It started off well for the club men when they won the opening leg 15-12 but then only set eleven in the next leg which Tiddington just went pass with twelve. The final and deciding leg was tied 16-16 with the Cricket club winning it on three sticks.
The White House are just about keeping in touch after they came away from The Six Bells ‘A’ Kidlington with a 2-1 win, in the leg scores of 21-18, 16-21, 20-15.

In Section 4 Mick Walsh with thirteen dolls (4-4-5) led the way for The Masons Arms ‘A’ as they came from behind to beat The George ‘B’. The Masons highest score of the season saw them lose the first leg 19-17 but recover well to win the next two 21-17, 25-13.
Littlemore British Legion ‘A’ and Rose Hill Club scored the same amount of dolls but it was The Legion who came out on top 2-1 in the leg scores of 16-22, 22-18, 12-10.
The Democrats ‘A’ got off to the worse possible start against The Swan ‘C’ when they could only muster up a set of four in the opening leg. They improved slightly better in the next two legs hitting eleven in both but it was no where near enough as the Swan won all three legs with 16-14-18.

In Section 5 The Bullnose Morris ‘B’ decline persists as they lost their second game on the bounce after winning their previous nine and fall further behind in their quest for the title. The Masons Arms ‘B’ were the victors this time, winning the first two legs 18-17, 18-14 before The Bullnose grabbed a point in the final leg 12-10.
Chequers ‘B’ secured their first 3-0 home win of the season after beating The Cricketers ‘A’. They won the first leg on three sticks after it was tied 12-12 then went on to complete the whitewash 16-9, 18-10. Steve Jenkins top scored with a dozen dolls (3-4-5).
Florence Park Clubs ten week running streak in Section 6 came to an end when Original Swan ‘A’ beat them 2-1 on their own patch. Swan won the first two legs 15-13, 15-14 before Florence Park won the last leg 18-14 and still gives them a glimmer of hope for the title.
Vikings Sports ‘C’ came away form close rivals Marston British Legion with all three points to boost their chances and dent the Legions. Vikings won all three legs at a canter 24-15, 18-16, 14-7.
Leaders Six Bells ‘B’ Quarry were lucky to come away from bottom team Green Road Club ‘A’ with all three points. The Bells shot into an early lead in the first leg 13-8 but just scrapped the next leg by the odd doll 14-13. The final leg was tied 14-14 with the Bells winning it on three sticks.

The last unbeaten record fell as Section 7 leaders The Red Lion ‘B’ Yarnton collapsed at home to Northway Club ‘B’ 2-1. With Red Lion hitting well below their average it let in Northway who won the first two legs 13-11, 15-10. Lion hit back well in the final leg 15-10.
Catherine Wheel ‘A’ and Kidlington Football Club both hit their best scores of the season as the club men just came out on top 2-1 in the leg scores of 18-16, 18-10, 11-16.

White Hart Wytham threw well to inflict only the second defeat of the season on leaders The Golden Ball. After The Golden Ball easily won the first leg 15-8 White Hart came back well to win the next two legs 13-5, 19-9.

The Semi-Finals of The Greene King & Jim Whitbread Cup were also played this week.
In The Greene King Cup The Swan ‘A’ had a comfortable 2-0 win over Section 2 side The Crown, while The Gladiators had a hard fought win over The Three Pigeons. Gladiators set and won the first leg 29-20 with The Pigeons levelling in the next leg 28-22. The final and deciding leg Pigeons set with 25 which The Gladiators matched. In The three sticks Pigeons could only hit nine which the Glad’s went past with three players to spare.
