Week 10


Despite Dennis Butler, Chris Jenkins & Keith Weller all bagging themselves a six for The Gladiators ‘A’ they still lost out 2-1 at home to Garsignton Sports ‘A’ in a close game. The opening leg went to the Sportsmen 23-21 with The Glad’s levelling in the next leg on three sticks after it was tied 28-28. The final and deciding leg was also tied 28-28 but this time Garsington won the leg on three sticks and with it the game. Dennis Butler top scored with fourteen dolls (4-4-6).
Six Bells ‘C’ Kidlington remain top and unbeaten in The Premier Section after a comfortable 3-0 win at home to Rose Hill Club ‘A’. Steve Ward was top dog with fourteen dolls (4-5-5) and team mate Pete Rampton chipped in with thirteen dolls (3-6-4) as they won all three legs 28-24, 27-19, 34-17.
The Three Pigeons lost ground as they unexpectedly lost at home 2-1 to The New Club ‘A’ for whom Robert Taylor excelled with fourteen dolls (4-4-6). New Club replied with 34 in the opening leg after being set 25 and then won the next leg 27-24. Pigeons salvaged a point in the final leg on three sticks after it was tied 26-26.
John Greenaway was in top form as he clanged off fourteen dolls including a six (6-3-5) as Red Lion ‘A’ Eynsham claimed a 2-1 win at home to The Cricketers ‘B’ in the leg scores of 27-25, 22-24, 29-23.
Section One leaders Yarnton British Legion lost at Black Prince ‘A’ 2-1. Mark Poulter’s baker’s dozen (4-4-5) was to no avail as they lost the first two legs 18-17, 25-22 but grabbed a point in the final leg 21-17.

Section 2 leaders Six Bells Quarry almost lost their unbeaten record when they scrapped to a 2-1 over Three Horseshoes ‘A’. After easily winning the first leg 25-18 they lost the next leg by the odd doll 21-20. The final and deciding leg Bell’s won by the odd doll 19-18. Tony Barrett top scored with a consistent 4-4-4.
Ampleforth Arms ‘A’ kept the pressure on at the top with a 2-1 win at home to Red Lion ‘B’ Eynsham thanks to thirteen dolls (6-4-3) from Mark Washington. Ampleforth won the first leg 26-18, lost the next 21-20 but secured victory in the final leg 16-14.

In Section 3 Chris Webb was in sparkling form as he bagged himself a six in his fourteen doll haul (4-6-4) for The Ampleforth Arms ‘C’ in their 2-1 win at The Crown. The first leg was tied 16-16 with The Amp winning it on three sticks 12-8. Crown levelled in the next leg 22-16 before The Ampleforth claimed victory in the deciding leg 17-16.

In Section 4 Vikings Sports ‘C’ move one point clear with a 2-1 victory at The Pheasant Inn ‘A’ despite scoring one doll less. They won the opening leg 13-11 lost the next 17-11 but won the final leg 16-13.
New Club ‘C’ failed to get maximum points after a disastrous middle leg at The Original Swan ‘A’. After going into an early lead 20-15 they were then set only 10 by The Swan in the next leg. However a full collapse by the team left them with a chase of 8. They were then set 12 in the final leg and managed to go past that by the odd doll with thirteen to claim the leg and game.

Only five points separate the top eight in Section 5 and it’s Vikings sports ‘D’ who lead the pack after a easy 3-0 win at home to basement boys Donnington Club ‘C’, 18-11, 22-12, 19-15.

Section 6 is just as close with six points separating the top eight. Ampleforth Arms ‘B’ lead the way by one point after defeating Red Lion ‘C’ Eynsham 2-1. They won the first leg 15-13 and were set 16 in the next leg, it seemed a formality after anchor man Chris Williams was left needing two to win, however he failed to trouble the doll to hand the leg to The Red Lion. Ampleforth secured victory in the final leg 16-12.

In Section 8 Richard Berry from Littlemore British Legion excelled with fourteen dolls (5-5-4) to guide them to a 2-1 win at The Cricketers Littleworth. They had to come from behind to get the victory after losing the first leg 13-12 they drew level in the next leg 20-10 and then obtained the win in the last leg 13-11.
David Lammin top scored with eleven dolls (3-4-4) for Florence Park Club ‘B’ as they took all three legs at home to Red Lion ‘B’ Cassington 15-13, 19-13, 14-9.
Leaders Gladiators ‘B’ crashed to their only second defeat of the season at Northway Club ‘A. It was all over after the first two legs, 16-14, 17-13 in Northway’s favour with The Glad’s getting a point in the final leg 19-13. Terry Beck top scored with ten dolls (3-4-3) for the leaders.

Steve Jessop clanged off thirteen dolls (5-3-5) to lead the Golden Ball to maximum points and stay unbeaten in Section 9 at The Red Lion ‘A’ Cassington 18-13, 23-14, 19-9, to move them to within one point of leaders Kings Arms ‘A’ who also won 3-0 away at The Kite 13-8, 17-9, 15-10.
