FINALS NIGHT REPORT

A packed crowd at Oxford Sports Club saw some sensational throwing with no fewer than six maximum sixes hit. Top of the pile was the Oxford Singles final between ten times winner Philip Adams and four times losing finalist Kevin Baker. What was witnessed was one of the top finals ever played. Philip Adams opened in the first leg with five. Baker replied by whipping off the doll with his first five sticks but just failed with his last that would have given him an early lead. Adams then set three in the three sticks with Baker replying with one to take the opening leg. The second leg Baker set with a maximum six only to see Adams also whip off all six dolls to send the leg into another three stick shoot out. This time Baker set but could only manage a one which let in Adams who hit the two dolls needed to give him his eleventh title and leave Baker still waiting for his first win.

Adams and Baker then paired up to take on Paul Townsend and Kevin Giles (Three Pigeons) in the Oxford Pairs in another epic. The Pigeons pair won the opening leg 7-5 but The Cricketers levelled in the next leg 8-7 with Adams hitting another six. In the final leg both pairs hit eight to send the deciding leg to three sticks, which they both totalled five, and then down to one stick each which incredibly all four players hit the doll, so back to six sticks which Baker & Adams won 5-4.

In the Ted Houghton Supplementary singles final John Lucin (Donnington Club ‘C’) just got the better over Pete Sellar (Crown Chalgrove) 2-1. Lucin won the first leg 3-2 but Sellar came back well to level in the next leg to beat a set of three by the odd doll with four. The deciding leg went to Lucin 3-2.

Sellar then teamed up with Mathew Arnold to win the Lower Pairs final 2-0 against the Bullnose Morris pairing of Frank Howlett & Paul Sims.

The Greene King team Cup was fought out between The Three Pigeons & The Cricketers ‘B’ and produced a high scoring game. Pigeons set the opening leg with 29 thanks to a perfect start from Kevin Giles with a maximum six. However Cricketers replied well leaving anchor man Dennis Sellar just needing three to win the leg which he done with his final stick. The next leg Cricketers set with 30 which proved too strong for The Pigeons who fell some dolls short.

In the Under 18’s final fifteen year old Elliot Greenough from The Original Swan beat Jake Carter from Florence Park in style. After winning the first leg 2-1 Elliott then went in a set a maximum six which proved too strong for Jake to give Elliott the title for the third time.

Den & Pete Sellar successfully retained the Parent & Child Trophy by coming from behind to beat Barry & James Gilding from The New Club. The Gildings won the first leg 7-6 lost the next 5-4 and then set six in the deciding leg. In reply Pete Sellar hit four leaving father Den to whip of the three dolls needed to win the leg and tie.

The Six Bells Kidlington had a comfortable 2-0 win over Team Monarch, 14-11, 16-4 in the Monty Greenaway Fours final with Pete Rampton staring for the Bells with a six in the second leg.
