Oxford Singles

Played at four different venues down to the winner to give the four semi-finalists to be played on September 5th.

There was a shock in the Oxford Singles as holder and ten times winner Philip Adams from the Cricketers crashed out in the first round. Steve Bayliss was the victor as he won the first leg 4-2, lost the next 5-4 then claimed the win in the final leg on three sticks after the leg was tied 4-4.
Bayliss was then involved in a lengthy game against Dick Walsh from Six Bells Kidlington. The first leg was tied 4-4 with Bayliss winning it on three sticks, Walsh then levelled in the next leg also on three sticks after it was tied 4-4. The final and deciding leg went to Bayliss 3-2.
In the Quarter final Bayliss lost out to Paul Townsend from The Three Pigeons 2-0 (4-3, 4-3) who had earlier defeated Steve Greenough (Garsington Sports) 2-0 and then team mate Mick Phipps 2-0 (3-2, 4-3).
Singles runner up Andy Beal from The Six Bells Kidlington faired better as he battled his way through to the semi-finals. In the first round he beat Dennis Butler from The George 2-0 (3-2, 3-2) then disposed of John Greenaway from The White Hart in the 2nd round 2-0 (4-2, 3-2). The Quarter final against Steve Walton from The George was a high scoring game. Walton set five in the opening leg with Beal matching it. Three sticks were tied 2-2 as was one stick. Back to six sticks and Walton set three but Beal clanged off his first four sticks to go one up. Beal then set five in the second leg which proved too much for Walton.
Walton was also involved in another classic in the earlier round against team mate Kevin Giles. Giles set six in the first leg which Walton replied with a six of his own, then won the leg on three sticks. Giles won the next leg to level and in the final leg it was tied 4-4, three, and one stick was tied before Walton won it back on six sticks 3-2.
Top Doll scorer Neil Lyon from The Three Pigeons made it through to the semi-finals quite comfortably. He beat team mate Pete Dempsey 2-0 in the first round and had another 2-0 win against Pete Shepherd from The Queens Head
(4-3, 4-2). In the quarter finals Lyon came up against Martin Cook from Team Monarch but again had another 2-0 win (4-1, 4-3).
Steve Ward (Six Bells Kidlington) made up the final Semi-finalist after defeating Willy Waite from The George 2-0. Ward won the first leg after Waite set three Ward hit four. Ward then set three in the next leg which Waite matched. Ward won the leg and game on three sticks 2-1.
The Singles title will once again elude Kevin Baker from The Cricketers as he fell at the first hurdle against Kevin Stuart from Headington British Legion in an extended match. Baker won the first leg 4-3 and then set three in the next leg. Stuart also hit three and a three and one stick shoot out could not separate them. Back to six sticks and Stuart won it 3-2. The deciding leg Baker set three but Stuart passed that with four.
